New Delhi:

The baby boy who was born to a 13-year-old rape survivor, whom Supreme Court of India had granted permission to terminate her 32-week pregnancy, died on Sunday morning.

The baby who was born prematurely on Friday faced respiratory complications and required mechanical breathing assistance. He was kept on ventilator support for 48 hours but succumbed to death around 10:30 AM on  Sunday.

The infant was kept at the neonatal intensive care unit at JJ Hospital in Mumbai. His organs were underdeveloped and he faced difficulty in breathing due to immature lungs.

The baby weighed 1.8kg at birth as a result of premature birth. A baby who is born between 39 and 40 weeks, usually weighs around 2.5 kg.

The infant is most likely to have died due to internal bleeding, as per the doctors. They are waiting for the autopsy report to confirm the exact reason of the death.

The teen's pregnancy was revealed on August 9, when her mother consulted a local doctor regarding her sudden weight gain. She was allegedly raped by her father's colleague.

The victim's parents had approached a Mumbai doctor who assisted them in filing an application in the Supreme Court asking for an approval to abort the teen's foetus.

Indian law states that abortion can only be done up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
