Mumbai stampede: Death toll in Elphinstone stampede climbs to 23

New Delhi:

The death toll in Elphinstone Road-Parel bridge stampede rose to 23 on Saturday after one person succumbed to injuries at KEM Hospital. The deceased was identified as Satyendrakumar Kanojia who was in his late forties, said the hospital's dean Avinash Supe.

"The patient was put on ventilator as soon as he wasadmitted to the hospital. We tried to save him but hesuccumbed to internal injuries," he said.

Thirty-eight injured persons were admitted in the hospital, Supe said.The tragedy occurred on Saturday when the overbridge, linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban stations, was overcrowded as people took shelter from rain.

The bridge is used by lakhs of people to commute to the commercial area with high-end corporate and media offices.
