Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has sought for help from the Central government following the flash flood and incessant rainfall which have claimed at least 12 lives and have left thousands homeless in several parts of Nagaland.
“The damage this year is unprecedented in the history,” said Temjen Toy, Chief Secretary, Nagaland, the state that had contributed Rs one crore for Kerala flood relief earlier on Thursday.

Since late July, the beautiful northeast state of India has been the centre of the havoc caused by the continuous rainfall in which more than 3000 families have lost their home in around 400 villages, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority said.
In an initial report to the Centre, Nagaland state government had demanded Rs 219 crore as immediate help and added that the demand is likely to spike up to Rs 400 crore even the damage is estimated to be around Rs 800 crore till now.

“It is the nature of the rainfall which is disruptive. It pours 100 mm in one hour,” said Johnny Asin, a special duty officer of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority said.
The main reason behind the floods has been due to the release of additional water from the dam as the water level rose at the Doyang Hydro electing project in Wokha district. The sudden release of water has resulted in flooding of the downstream areas.
“About 359 locations of roads have been totally cut-off sending the state into an emergency situation,” Asin said when asked about how much time it will take to restore the situation to normalcy.
Meanwhile, the state government is eagerly waiting for the Centre to put forward to their lending hand.
“The entire capital outlay of the state is Rs 500 crore. This damage alone is going to cost us more,” he said, adding a central team is set to visit the state in September.
