New Delhi:

Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, has begun on Sunday across India as the muslims observe their first roza today. The Muslim clerics announed the beginning of the holy month where the Muslims keep a dawn-to-dusk fast.

The announcement was made after the sighting of the moon on Friday evening. Sehri, which is the pre-dawn meal eaten by Muslims who keep fast, will begin from Saturday night.

Ramzan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar when Muslims abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset and join mass prayers at mosques. This annual observance is regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam.

The end of the holy month of Ramadan is marked with a grand celebration which is known as Eid ul-Fitr (or Eid al-Fitr), the Feast of Fast-Breaking, which happens to be a three day festival.
