US Secretary of State Pompeo dials Sushma Swaraj to express 'regret'; reschedule '2+2 dialogue'

US postpones high-level 2+2 dialogue with India due to 'unavoidable reasons' (PTI)

New Delhi:

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her American counterpart Mike Pompeo have agreed to reschedule the postponed '2+2 dialogue' at a mutually convenient dates and location to hold the high-level meet at the earliest, a State Department spokesperson said on Thursday.

Pompeo dialed Swaraj to express his "regret" over the meeting being postponed. During the phone call, he discussed further strengthening the US-India cooperation, asserting that India is "a major priority" for the Trump administration.

The United States on Wednesday postponed the '2+2 dialogue' with India, which was scheduled to be held on July 6 in Washington, citing “unavoidable reasons”.

“US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke to EAM Sushma Swaraj a short while ago to express his regret and deep disappointment at the US having to postpone the 2+2 Dialogue for unavoidable reasons,” MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted on Wednesday night.

The external affairs minister, along with Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, was scheduled to visit the US for high-level dialogue with their American counterparts - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defence James Mattis.

Further, Kumar said that the a new date for the crucial dialogue will be fixed soon and both Swaraj and Pompeo had agreed to that

"Pompeo sought EAM Sushma Swaraj’s understanding, and they agreed to identify new mutually convenient dates to hold the Dialogue at the earliest, in India or the US,” he said in another tweet.
