Uttarakhand finance minister Prakash Pant on Wednesday said that the state government has slashed 2% cess and 2% VAT on petrol and diesel.

The move comes a day after Gujarat and Maharashtra cut VAT on fuel.

On Tuesday, Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani had said: "After the central government's instructions, Gujarat has decided to reduce VAT on petrol and diesel by 4 percent."

Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar had termed it as a "Diwali gift" to people of the state.

"The chief minister has approved a proposal to reduce the VAT on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 and Re 1 a litre, respectively. This is our Diwali gift to the masses," Mungantiwar had informed.
