New Delhi:

Villagers in Jharkhand’s Maoist-hit district Khunt took a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) rank officer and his team hostage on Thursday evening.

A superintendent of police (SP) rank officer posted in Jharkhand Police headquarters had confirmed the incident.

He told the media that DSP and his team has been made captive by the villagers of Kotam Silodan, around 60 kilometers from Jharkhand state capital Ranchi.

Jharkhand Police launched an operation led by the Khunti SP to rescue the captive police personnel. The police had to fire in the air in order to control the villagers.

The villagers, however, lost their cool as police resorted to firing in the air. As per reports, top police personnel tried to pacify the villagers but they weren't ready to listen to them.

Along with the SP, the SDM has also been taken hostage by Kanki villagers of Murhi Panchayat. Some police personnel have also been taken hostage. Nearly 1500 villagers are involved in the hostage situation.
