New Delhi :

Believe it or not, eight donkeys walked free on Monday after serving four days jail term for eating exotic plants at Orai in Uttar Pradesh’s Jalaun district.

A video has been uploaded by news agency ANI on its Twitter handle showing eight donkeys coming out from the main gate of the Orai Jail.

According to locals and jail officials, the herd of donkey’s were apprehended by orders of a senior officer for destroying plants planted outside the jail campus.

A head constable deployed in Orai jail told ANI, “The herd of donkeys were ‘apprehended’ for damaging plants.”

Jail superintendent Tulsi Ram Sharma talking to PTI said, "Various types of saplings were planted in the district jail premises for beautification. Those were damaged by the donkeys,"

He added, "We had brought plants from Delhi and had planted them outside the jail premises. In the last few days, cattles destroyed these plants worth over Rs 50,000. We caught the animals and handed them to their owners with instructions not to let their animals loose here.”

The head constable also added, “We had several times warned the owner of the donkeys not to let the herd graze outside the  jail campus. Senior officer had planted costly plants outside the jail campus. The donkeys used to destroy the crops. They were ‘apprehended’ after the owner gave no ear to the warnings.”

The donkeys were handed over to their owner after the latter promised that the animals would never be seen around the prison building again.
