According to a new study, if caffeine is involved in premature babies' diet, their performance can improve slightly better that measure their ability to breathe out later in life.
The research also found that during a force breath, they are also significantly better in exhaling. Earlier also researchers have found that caffeine performs the function of respiratory stimulant and improves short-term breathing rates and also lung's ability to stretch and expand.
In the research, the participants who were not even ten days older were treated with caffeine or placebo for a time period of 43 weeks. After the treatment, it was found that babies who were given caffeine had better performance in tests that measured their ability to breathe out.
According to researchers, this has been associated to a reduced need for ventilation aid.
Lead author Dr Lex Doyle told Daily Mail, that the apnea of prematurity is reduced with the help of caffeine, which belongs to a group of drugs known as methylxanthines. Apnea is a condition in which there is a cessation in breathing in babies for many seconds
