New Delhi:

All the parents out there you need to read this. A new study has indicated that exposure of children to air pollution while going to school can lead to damaging effects on their children.

The research which was published in the journal Environmental Pollution revealed that exposure to pollution leads to reduction in the working memory of the children.

The study found out an association between the reduction of children working memory and the exposure to fine particulate matters while going to school.

An earlier study revealed that 20 percent of the black carbon inhaled by a child was during urban commutes.

The experimental studies conducted earlier had suggested these short exposure to such high concentrations of pollutants can be detrimental for the health of children.

The research which was carried out in Barcelona involved more than 1200 children under the age group of 7 to 10 years from 39 different schools. As a matter of fact, all the children walked to their school every day.

The working memory and attention span of the children assessed many times during the study which was conducted for twelve months.

Researchers calculated the exposure to air pollution on the basis of estimated levels of pollutants on the shortest route to the school.

The analysis indicated that exposure to fine particulate matter was associated with reduced growth in the working memory of children.

The researchers have stated that it doesn't mean that children who commute by car or any public transport are not exposed to pollution.
Indeed, the study calls for keeping a check on the use of private vehicles in order for the sake of our children.
