From Aamir’s Lagaan to Akshay’s Gold: Best Bollywood flicks based on sports

Akshay Kumar on Wednesday released the first poster of his upcoming release on sports Gold. As the director and producers of the film has already revealed the basic plot of the flick and on whom it is based. The movie is not based on any sportsman, it a fictional story but the story revolves around the time of Independence when the country claimed its first gold in Olympics. Movie bugs have always praised and lauded such flicks with sports plot and made them a huge commercial success.
Here are some of the Bollywood flick based on sports.
Lagaan – The movie that changed Aamir Khan’s career forever. The movie was based on a true story which was forgotten somewhere in the history of India before Independence. In the movie, few villagers were challenged by the British authorities for a cricket match on wager to waive of taxes. The movie was released in the year 2001 and was a commercial success.
Chak De India – The movie was released in the year 2007 starring Shah Rukh Khan in lead role. However, the makers of the flick never claimed it to be a biopic but it is said that it was loosely based on the life of Mir Ranjan Negi who was an Indian player accused of match fixing when India lost a match to Pakistan in 1982 Asian Games. And then he returned as a coach for the 1998 Asian Games where India won the Gold medal.
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – The Farhan Akhtar starrer was based on the life of Indian Olympic runner Milkha Singh. The movie depicts the struggles faced by Milkha Singh and despite these struggles how he managed to excel in Olympic Games. Milkha Singh sold the rights for the film for just one rupee only.
Mary Kom – Released in the year 2013, the movie features Priyanka Chopra as the Indian Olympic medal winner Mary Kom. She is also the first Indian woman boxer to grab a Gold Medal in Asian Games in 2014. The movie was a huge commercial success and also pushed Priyanka’s Bollywood career which was going nowhere after plenty of flops.
MS Dhoni: The Untold Story – The movie is based on the life of one of the most successful Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Sushant Singh Rajput played the role of MSD in the movie. The movie went on to churn Rs 216 crore worldwide.
