The Krishna Pushkaram river festival that comes once in 12 years began today with traditional gaiety. It is celebrated to honour River Krishna and seek her blessing. It is celebrated all over Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the focal point of the festivities is the city of Vijayawada. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and his wife Bhuvaneswari joined Kanchi seer Sri Sri Jayendra Saraswati in taking a holy dip in river Krishna at Durga ghat at Vijayawada at the start of the 12-day festival.

As per the legend, there lived a Brahmin in a village. He did severe penance towards Lord Shiva. As a result of it, Lord Shiva granted a boon because of which he was blessed with a power to purify the holy rivers. Thenceforth he was known as Pushkar (the one who nourishes).
