Independence Day Special: From 1947 to 2018, India in pictures

As we celebrate the 72nd anniversary of Indian Independence, it becomes our duty and behoves us to take a look back at the main and important incidents across these years that shaped out our country what it is today. So, let us take a look back at these years remembering some of the important events till now.
On January 26, 1950, India finally became a republic when the 34th and the last Governor-General of India Chakravati Rajagopalachari read out a proclamation and declared the birth of Republic of India.
On May 18, 1974, India joined the elite group when they conducted their first nuclear test in the deserts of Pokhran, Rajasthan. The operation was assigned a code name of ‘Smiling Buddha’.
On June 25th, 1975 Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (President) declared emergency on the advice of PM Indira Gandhi. During that time more than 1,000 political opponents were imprisoned. There were a campaign was run which involved compulsory birth control.
Finally, a historic day arrived in the Indian cricket when Kapil Dev-led team India defeated the dangerous West Indies at the Lord’s to win the maiden World Cup.
Indian Air Force pilot and an astronaut, Rakesh Sharma on April 2, 1984 became the first Indian to go into space. He was into space for eight days near Earth’s Orbit.
A British drama flick Slumdog Millionaire, released in the year 2008 clinched several Oscars including Indian artists such as AR Rahman, Resul Pookutty and Gulzar. The movie also won the Best film award.
