Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off "Run for Rio" at Major Dhyanchand Stadium near India gate in New Delhi today. “Run for Rio” was organized to celebrate the Olympic mood, especially when India is sending its largest ever contingent of 119 athletes. Around 20,000 school children participated in the Run. The objective of the run was not just to encourage our athletes and wish them all the best in the forthcoming Rio Olympics, but also to connect public at large, especially children and youth, with the Olympic spirit and power of sports. The Prime Minister said that sports was a necessity in life and everyone must play to shine.
Flagging off the event, PM Modi said that this year’s contingent of 119 Indian players is largest ever and urged the nation to vow to send more than 200 players next time.
PM Modi assured that our athletes will win the hearts of the world and will show the world what India is about.
Revealing that this year government has allotted special funds for athletes, PM Modi said the additional funds are to provide utmost comfort and proper Indian food for the players.
PM Modi released a publication of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) on Indian Olympics Journey, an info-guide on country’s Olympics achievements and plans for the future.
"As per norms, players are taken to the venue two days before the start of every Games. This time we are sending the contingent in advance, so that players are familiar with local conditions." said PM Modi
