Reacting to the incident, Congress leader Manish Tewari dubbed it as extremely unfortunate and hoped the government would act with alacrity.
At least 24 CRPF personnel were killed and six others wounded in an ambush by Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district on Monday.
The deadly assault occurred around 12:25 PM in Kalapathar area of south Bastar region, one of the worst-hit by Maoist violence.
They were sanitising a road which is being built in the area, the officer added. All the troops belonged to the 74th battalion of the force deployed in the area for anti-Maoist operations.
Reinforcements have been rushed from the nearest CRPF camp, the officer added. Twelve personnel of the CRPF were killed on March 12 in the same district in an ambush by naxalites.
The six injured CRPF personnel are-ASI R P Hembram, Head Constable Ram Mehar, Constable Swaroop Kumar, Constable Mohinder Singh, Constable Jitendra Kumar, Constable Sher Mohammad and Constablee Latoo Oraon.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh has called an emergency meeting later in the day. He returned to Chhattisgarh after cancelling his all meetings.
