New Delhi:

Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the ancient wonders of the world and is located on the Giza plateau near Cairo.Although many theories persist as to the purpose of the pyramid, the most widely accepted understanding is that it was constructed as a tomb for the king.

Scientists have recently found a hidden chamber in Khufu's Pyramid, also called the Great Pyramid, the first such discovery in the structure in the 19th century.

What's more, the team used cosmic rays to locate the void and estimate its size through millions of tons of rock. The muon scan is accomplished by planting special plates inside and around the pyramid to collect data on the particles, which rain down from the earth's atmosphere.

The cavernous space is roughly 100 feet long and sits almost directly above the Grand Gallery; a towering passage that leads to the tomb of Pharoah Khufu.

The research group has published its findings in the scientific journal 'Nature'.The newly discovered chamber does not appear to be connected to any known internal passages.

Scientists involved in the scanning called the find a "breakthrough" that highlighted the usefulness of modern particle physics in archaeology.

The pyramids at Giza, the last surviving wonder of the ancient world, have captivated visitors since they were built as royal burial chambers 2,500 years ago.
