The menacing roar of volcanic thunder has been recorder for the first time ever. Those who have witness the phenomenon have narrated it as a thunder-like boom.
Scientists are finding it difficult to differentiate the sound of volcano from other sounds like hot gases, bubble blasts, shock wave booms, etc.
The Bogoslof volcano in the Alaska had earlier started rumbling in December of 2016. The scientists positioned mics on a neighbouring island to capture the eight months long turbulence.

The team of scientists then reviewed the recording and were able to isolate the cracking sounds, that are signature of volcanic grumbling. The scientists wrote that thunder signals took place at the same time as lightning signals from the eruption. Thunders can be used to study volcanic lightning in future.
“I expect that going forward, other researchers are going to be excited and motivated to look in their data sets to see if they can pick up the thunder signal,” said the scientists while addressing the media.
