Three suspected bookies were arrested with Rs 40 lakhs from Kanpur’s Landmark hotel on Wednesday night, sources have said. The two IPL team, Gujarat Lions and Delhi Daredevils teams were also staying in the same hotel and a police investigation is underway regarding the issue.Although the league has entered its 10th edition, the cloud of betting refuses to leave it.
Sources further claim that the police also nabbed a Mumbai based mastermind named Ramesh Shah. Apart from Shah, the other two captured suspects are named Vikas Chauhan and Ramesh.
As per the police, Shah’s network extends to all the major stadiums in India, from where he gets important information regarding the nature of pitches.
The BCCI Anti-Corruption Bureau were keeping an eye on the bookies for three days, and wanted to catch them red-handed.
On the 17th floor of the hotel, two people were taken into custody from room 1733, where three mobile phones, a diary and Rs.40 Lakh were seized in cash.
It is not the first time that Kanpur has witnessed such an incident. In 2013, just before the IPL finals between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, a betting racket was busted and eight people were arrested for placing money on IPL matches. A total of Rs. 8 Lakh in cash, along with two laptops, 18 mobiles and a car were procured by the police.
As far as the match was concerned, Delhi scripted a two wicket victory over Gujarat Lions with the help of a gritty knock by Shreyas Iyer
