New Delhi :

English footballer Wayne Rooney has become the Manchester United's highest goalscorer when he netted his 250th goal for the club in a 1-1 draw away to Stoke City in the Premier League on Saturday.

The England and United captain has equalised the record of most number of goals in the fourth minute of the match at the stoppage time at the Britannia Stadium to break fellow England footballer Bobby Charlton's record of 249 goals for Manchester United.

Making his 546th United appearance, the 31-year-old forward got passed 1966 World Cup-winner Charlton's record in style when he bent a free-kick past Stoke goalkeeper Lee Grant into the top corner of the net.

Rooney said he is ‘proud and delighted’ to become Manchester United's record goalscorer. "It means a hell of a lot, it is a great honour," he added.

Born in Liverpool, Rooney turned to Manchester United from Everton in 2004 and never turned back after that. Since then he has been an out-and-out striker and lately an attacking midfielder for the club.
