New Delhi:

In a heart-breaking 0-1 defeat by hosts Malaysia, India on Friday failed to qualify for the final of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2017 Hockey tournament. This is the second time in a row when India failed to qualify for the tournament.

India needed to win the game by a two-goal margin to make it to the final as Great Britain defeated New Zealand 3-2 earlier in the day. But after facing the second loss in the tournament, India failed to do so.

India will now face New Zealand on Saturday to compete for the Bronze medal. The final match will be played between the defending champions Australia and Great Britain.

India’s victory by a two-goal margin would have pushed the British team to fight for the Bronze but the defeat by Malaysia turned the tables round.

So far, Australia have won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup nine times, while Great Britain are in the final after 23 years. The Britons won the title in their lone entry into the final in 1994.
