Five time world champion M C Mary Kom secured a berth in the finals of 2017 Asian Women's Boxing Championships being played in Vietnam. The Indian pugilist beat Japan's Tsubasa Komura in the light weight category semi-finals to book a place in the gold medal round.The veteran boxer had an easy win over his Japanese opponent, winning the bout by unanimous decision.
Mary Kom, a five-time world champion and an Olympic bronze-medalist, defeated Chinese Taipei's Meng-Chieh Pin in a split verdict in the quarter-finals to make the last four stage of the light flyweight (48kg) category.
A total of 107 boxers from 20 countries are competing in the continental meet where India are placed third in the all- time medals' list with 19 gold, 21 silver and 20 bronze.
Apart from Mary Kom, India’s has six other representatives in the semi-finals. Shiksha Singh shall be taking on Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yu-ting. Sonia Lather, Priyanka Choudhary, L Sarita Devi, Lovlina Borgohain and Seema Poonia shall also be in action in the semis, fighting it out for a place in the final on Tuesday.
