India's female grappler Vinesh Phogat was handed a 4-8 defeat at the hands of Japanese Sae Nanjo in the gold medal match of the women's 55kg wrestling category on Friday.

Vinesh had cruised into the finals of the 55 kg weight category by inflicting a crushing 10-0 win over Sevara Eshmuratova of Uzbekistan before thrashing China's Qi Zhang 4-0. Meanwhile, Ritu Phogat won the bronze medal in the 48-kg category after her Chinese opponent Sun Yanan pulled out of the match owing to an injury.
