2017 is coming to an end and it has been a stellar year for India in the sporting arena. It was just not the Indian team which had an unbeatable run on home soil reaching the pinnacle of world cricket but their sportsmen who hogged the limelight bringing laurels to the country in badminton, boxing, football, chess and athletics.

As we usher into the 2018, let us recall some of the notable performances of Indian sportsmen

PV Sindhu became only the second Indian to win a silver at the BWF World Championships. Sindhu bagged the silver after losing out to Japan's Nozomi Okhuhara in a nail bitting title clash. Sindhu had a brilliant season winning titles in the Indian Open and Korea Open besides ending up as the losing finalist in Hong Kong Open. She ended the year on a high by ending as the runner up in the BWF World Super Series finals.

VIJENDER SINGH
VIJENDER SINGH

Vijender Singh extended his unbeaten streak to ten in professional boxing after he successful defended his double titles (Asia Pacific super middleweight, Oriental super middleweight) against China Zulpikar Maimaitiali and African Champion Ernest Amuzu.

Singh won the hearts of many after he offered Zulpikar’s title back to him as a goodwill gesture amid the Doklam row between the two Asian nations. “I don’t want tension on the border. It’s a message of peace. That’s important,” Vijender said after the fight.

KIDAMBI SRIKANTH

Kidambi Srikanth spearheaded Indian men challenge on the BWF tour winning a titles .The tall and lanky shuttler went onto win four Super Series titles. He annexed the Australian, Indonesian, French and Denmark Open titles.

Srikanth ended as the losing finalist to fellow Indian Sai Praneeth in the Singapore Open Super Series. He thereby got into the league of Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei winning four Super Series titles in a season.

PANKAJ ADVANI

Ace cueist Pankaj Advani continued his dominance at the very top in his sport by winning a record 18th World title. Advani clinched his 17th world title after he thrashed arch-rival Mike Russell of England in the 2017 IBSF World Billiards Championship.He then went onto win the IBSF World snooker Championships by trouncing Iran's Amir Sarkhosh in the title clash.

MARY KOM

Five-time World Champion Mary Kom won her fifth gold medal at the 2017 Asian Women's Boxing Championships by defeating North Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi in the finals. The dimunitive Manipuri boxer made a resounding comeback to the international stage, clinching her first international gold medal since the 2014 Asian Games.

SUNDAR SINGH GURJAR

Sundar Singh Gurjar became the first Indian para athlete to win a Gold at the World Para Athletics Championships. Gurjar hurled the javelin at a staggering 60.86m to climb the top of the podium in his F-46 event. India ended the games with their best ever medal tally, winning one gold, two silvers and two bronze.
