Make in India: Apple to soon assemble iPhone SE in Bengaluru

New Delhi:

Apple will very soon start assembling lower priced iPhone SE models at a contract manufacturer’s plant in IT hub Bengaluru. It is too early to ascertain if Apple will start the manufacture of much talked about Make in India iPhone 8.

However Apple may not assemble 300,000 to 400,000 iPhone SE handsets from the start as reported by The Economic Times and hinted at a substantially lower quantity, as informed by Reuters source.

Karnataka’s IT Minister Priyank M Kharge had earlier said in a statement that “Apple’s intentions to manufacture in Bengaluru will foster cutting edge technology ecosystem and supply-chain development in the state, which are critical for India to compete globally”.

Even Apple’s cheaper iPhone SE saw a lukewarm launch in the Indian market, where consumers tend to buy used or refurbished iPhones. Apple is making space for itself in smartphone market, having shipped 2.5 million iPhones to India last year — a third of which were shipped in the fourth quarter.
