After Nawaz Sharif's ouster, who will become Pakistan's next prime minister?

New Delhi:

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday disqualified Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from holding public office after it found him guilty in Panama Papers case.

After the apex court decision, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's leader resigned from the post of Prime Minister. Minutes after the SC’s historic verdict, PM house issued a notification announcing Sharif’s resignation despite having "strong reservations" on apex court’s ruling.

The PML(N) spokesperson also said that the party will use all the legal options available to contest SC’s verdict.

However, the country with its Army as a parallel regime- who governs the nation from behind the scenes stands without its head of state.

Given the current situation of the country, Army Chief Qamar Bazwa would also want someone to take over as prime minister to attract International attention towards Pakistan’s long time Kashmir agenda until next year’s general election.

Who will become the next prime minister?

It is a very uncertain situation. The party PML(N) revolves around one family of Nawaz Sharif and apart from his family, no other politician fancy his chances. However, Mian Shehbaz Sharif is one name that comes to every political pundit’s mind.

Shehbaz is the brother of Nawaz Sharif and current chief Minister of Punjab. His family migrated from Kashmir’s Anantnag for business and eventually settled down in Pakistan.

Shehbaz graduated in Arts from the Government College University, Lahore. His political career began in 1988 when he was elected to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab in Pakistani general election but his term ended in between when assemblies were dissolved in 1993.

However, he was again elected to Provincial Assembly of Punjab and became the leader of the opposition. In 1997, he got elected as the chief minister of Punjab for the first time. The current is his third term as CM of Punjab.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) wants Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan to replace Nawaz Sharif as the prime minister.
