United States President Donald Trump on Thursday warned that the move to impeach him would have a big bearing on markets and “everyone would be very poor”.

In an interview with Fox & Friends, Trump said, “I don't know how you can impeach somebody who's done a great job. I tell you what, if I ever got impeached, I think the market would crash, I think everybody would be very poor."

Trump, pointing at his head, further said, "Because without this thinking, you would see numbers that you wouldn't believe in reverse."

The US president also hailed his economic measures saying had he not been elected the country’s economy was going downwards.

"I freed up, I got rid of regulations, the tax cut was a tremendous thing," he said and added, "Had Hillary and the Democrats gotten in, had she been the President, you would have had negative growth. We picked up $10 trillion worth."

This was the first time the US president has spoken about the prospect of being impeached after his ex-lawyer Michael Cohen pleaded guilty of violating elections law on his directions.

Cohen had said that he handled hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal during the 2016 US presidential elections “at the direction” of Trump. He said the money was given to the ladies “for the principal purpose of influencing the election” since they had alleged an affair with Trump.

However, it was unlikely that the Opposition would try to impeach Trump before mid-term elections scheduled to held in November. Currently, Trump's Republican Party holds majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
