Sikkim Assembly elections 2019: SKM’s PS Golay takes oath as new chief minister
The Northeastern State Was Being Ruled By Sikkim Democratic Front's Pawan Kumar Chamling Since Last 24 Years.
Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) president Prem Singh Tamang, popularly known as PS Golay, on Monday took oath as the new chief minister of Sikkim. Golay’s oath to the office was administered by Governor Ganga Prasad at a function at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok.
In the recently held Assembly elections, Golay’s Sikkim Kratikari Morcha (SKM) ended 24-year rule of Sikkim Democratic Front’s Pawan Kumar Chamling by winning 17 seats in the 32-member Assembly.
The Sikkim Democratic Front won 15 seats but its total number of seats would be counted 14 as Chamling had contested from two seats and won both. He will now have to vacate one of them, where elections will be held again.
Earlier on Saturday, the SKM president, accompanied by the 17 newly-elected legislators of his party, had met the Governor and staked claim to form the govenrment in the state.
Who is Prem Singh Tamang aka PS Golay - a brief profile of the new Sikkim chief minister
Prem Singh Tamang, famously known as PS Golay, was born a Nepali family of Kalu Singh Tamang and Dhan Maya Tamang on February 5, 1968. He completed his schooling from Soreng Senior Secondary School, West Sikkim. Later, he completed his degree in Bachelors of Arts from Darjeeling Government College.
Before entering politics, Golay was a government teacher. Later, he quit the job to join the Chamling's SDF and was elected to the Sikkim Legislative Assembly in 1994. He later separated from SDF and formed his own party - the Sikkim Democratic Front - in 2013.
