In a shocking incident, decomposed bodies of 14 newborns were found in an abandoned land in Haridebpur area of West Bengal’s Kolkata during a cleaning drive on Sunday, police said.

The bodies were wrapped in plastic bags and were found on the grassy land on Raja Rammohan Roy Sarani in Haridebpur when labourers were cleaning the area, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said, according to news agency PTI.

“We have no clue where from they (the bodies) have come. Going by circumstantial evidence, it seems that they were dumped there as the land was lying abandoned,” PTI quoted the officer as saying.

While some of the bodies were in a semi-decomposed state, a few were fully decomposed. Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee and Commissioner of Police Rajeev Kumar have reached the spot.

Initially, it was not known that who dumped the bodies there but police were investigating the case. More details were awaited.
