Lok Sabha Elections Results 2019: Narendra Modi to Rahul Gandhi, key contestants in Uttar Pradesh

The 2019 Lok Sabha Elections verdict will be announced in the next few hours. As the world watches to know the mandate of the biggest elections of the planet, a lot of interest, both political and otherwise, would be to know if Uttar Pradesh is sending another Prime Minister to 7, Lok Nayak Marg or not. Because as they say that the way to Delhi’s power corridor goes from UP, it would be fascinating to see the poll arithmetic of all parties. Will Maa Ganga bless Narendra Modi again? Will Rahul Gandhi save his citadel in Amethi? This will be ascertained only after bulk of vote-counting is completed. The exit polls have shown all bigwigs including Modi, Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav winning their individual seats. But forming the government at the Centre is not a solo task. It requires numbers and performance in Uttar Pradesh will help the winning party to get that magic figure. As the poll officers get ready to unbox the fate of 130 crore Indians, here are Uttar Pradesh’s key contestants and crucial political battles:  

1. Ghaziabad (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Vijay Kumar Singh, Margin: 5,67,260)

2019 candidates: Vijay Kumar Singh (BJP) Vs Suresh Bansal (SP) Vs Dolly Sharma (Congress)

BJP leader and Union Minister VK Singh is again in the fray from Ghaziabad. In 2014, Singh defeated Congress candidate Raj Babbar by a massive margin of 5,67,260 votes. Singh is facing the 'Mahagathbandhan' candidate Suresh Bansal and Congress candidate Dolly Sharma. Ghaziabad was created after the delimitation process in 2009 and BJP's Rajnath Singh emerged victorious from it that time. Earlier, the seat was known as Hapur and it was won by BJP candidate Ramesh Chand Tomar four times consecutively in 1991, 1996, 1998 and 1999.

2. Baghpat (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Satya Pal Singh, Margin: 2,09,866)

2019 candidates: Satya Pal Singh (BJP) Vs Jayant Chaudhary (RLD)

Baghpat has been considered as a bastion of Ajit Singh and his father former prime minister Charan Singh. But BJP's Satya Pal Singh, who was the former Mumbai Police commissioner, defeated Ajit Singh in a big shocker. In fact, Ajit came third in the contest and received only 1,99,516 votes. SP's Ghulam Mohammed was the runner-up and lost the elections at the hands of Satya Pal by a margin of 2,09,866 votes. Ajit lost the seat in 1998 also when he was defeated by BJP's Sompal Singh Shastri. Ajit Singh won the seat in 1989, 1991, 1996, 1999, 2004 and 2009. Charan Singh represented the seat in 1977, 1980 and 1984. Now, Charan Singh's grandson and Ajit Singh's son Jayant Chaudhary will try to avenge his father's humiliating defeat in these elections with the backing of Mayawati's BSP and Akhilesh Yadav's SP. The Congress won the seat only once in 1971.

3. Gautam Buddha Nagar (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Mahesh Sharma, Margin: 2,80,212)

2019 candidates: Mahesh Sharma (BJP) Vs Satbeer Nagar (BSP) Vs Arvind Singh Chauhan (Congress)

Union Minister Mahesh Sharma has been pitted against Congress candidate Arvind Singh Chauhan and BSP's Satbeer Nagar. In 2014, Sharma won the seat by a margin of 2,80,212 votes and defeated SP's Narendra Bhati. In 2009, BSP's Surendra Singh Nagar won the seat.

4. Muzaffarnagar (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Sanjeev Kumar Balyan, Margin: 4,01,150)

2019 candidates: Dr Sanjeev Kumar Balyan (BJP) Vs Ajit Singh (RLD)

Former Union minister Ajit Singh will take on BJP's Sanjeev Kumar Balyan in Muzaffarnagar as a joint candidate of the 'Mahagathbandhan'. Singh lost his traditional Baghpat seat in 2014 and decided to shift his base to Muzaffarnagar. In 2014, Balyan defeated BSP's Kadir Rana by a huge margin of 4,01,150 votes. In the last seven elections, the BJP won the seat four times in 1991, 1996, 1998 and 2014. The Congress, the SP and the BSP won it in 1999, 2004 and 2009 respectively.

5. Fatehpur Sikri (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Babulal, Margin: 1,73,106)

2019 candidates: Raj Kumar Chaher (BJP) Vs Raj Babbar (Congress) Vs Shreebhagwan Sharma (BSP)

Congress leader Raj Babbar will be taking on BJP's Raj Kumar Chaher and BSP's Shreebhagwan Sharma in Fatehpur Sikri this time. Earlier, the party fielded Babbar from Moradabad but the leader asked the party to change his seat. In 2014, BJP's Choudhary Babulal defeated BSP's sitting MP Seema Upadhyay by a massive margin of over 1,73,000 votes. The party has decided to change the candidate this time.

6. Mathura (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Hema Malini, Margin: 3,30,743)

2019 candidates: Hema Malini (BJP) Vs Mahesh Pathak (Congress) Vs Kunwar Narendra Singh (RLD)

BJP's Hema Malini will try to retain her seat against RLD's Narendra Singh and Congress candidate Mahesh Pathak. In 2014, Malini defeated RLD leader and Ajit Singh's son Jayant Chaudhary with a huge margin of over 3,30,000 votes. Chaudhary is contesting from his family bastion Baghpat this time. In the last seven elections, the BJP captured the seat five times in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2014. The Congress won the seat in 2004 whereas RLD's Chaudhary won the seat once in 2009 in an alliance with the BJP. Saffron party's Chaudhary Tejveer Singh represented the seat thrice in the Lok Sabha.

7. Agra (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Ram Shankar Katheria, Margin: 3,00,263)

2019 candidates: SP Singh Baghel (BJP) Vs Preeta Harit (Congress) Vs Manoj Kumar Soni (BSP)

BJP's Ram Shankar Katheria won the Agra Lok Sabha seat decisively in 2014 for the second consecutive time when he defeated BSP's Narayan Singh Suman with a massive margin of over 3 lakh. Samajwadi Party's Raj Babbar won the seat in 1999 and 2004 whereas BJP's Bhagwan Shankar Rawat represented the seat thrice in 1991, 1996 and 1998. However, the party decided to field SP Singh Baghel from Agra this time and shifted Katheria to Etawah.

8. Amroha (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Kanwar Singh Tanwar, Margin: 1,58,214)

2019 candidates: Kanwar Singh Tanwar (BJP) Vs Sachin Choudhary (Congress) Vs Kunwar Danish Ali (BSP)

BJP's sitting MP Kanwar Singh Tanwar will try to retain his seat against BSP leader Danish Ali and Congress candidate Sachin Choudhary. Earlier, the Congress fielded Rashid Alvi from the seat but later he was replaced with Choudhary. Ali was with the JDS before joining the BSP. In the last seven elections, the BJP represented the seat thrice in 1991, 1998 and 2014. Former cricketer Chetan Chauhan won the seat for the saffron party twice. The SP, the BSP and the RLD won the seat in 1996, 1999 and 2009 respectively.

9. Rampur (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Dr Nepal Singh, Margin: 23,435)

2019 candidates: Jaya Prada (BJP) Vs Sanjay Kapoor (Congress) Azam Khan (SP)

Rampur will see one of the biggest battles of all time as BJP's Jaya Prada is facing SP's Azam Khan. In 2014, BJP's Nepal Singh won the seat for the party after defeating SP candidate Naseer Ahmad Khan by a narrow margin of over 23,000 votes. Jaya Prada represented the constituency twice in 2004 and 2009 as SP's candidate. Congress leader Begum Noor Bano won the seat twice in 1996 and 1999 whereas the BJP won the seat for the first time in 1991. Party's senior leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi represented the seat in 1998.

10. Pilibhit (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Maneka Gandhi, Margin: 3,07,052)

2019 candidates: Varun Gandhi (BJP) Vs Hemraj Verma (SP)

Pilibhit has been Maneka Gandhi's personal fiefdom since 1989. She has represented the seat six times in 1989, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2014. In 2009, she has left the seat for her son Varun Gandhi and shifted to Varun's Sultanpur seat. This time also Varun is in the fray from Pilibhit. In 2014, Maneka defeated SP candidate Budhsen Verma by over 3,07,000 votes. The Congress last won the seat in 1984.

11. Sambhal (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Satyapal Singh, Margin: 5,174)

2019 candidates: Parmeshwar Lal Saini (BJP) Vs JP Singh (Congress) Vs Shafiqur Rahman Barq (SP)

Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav represented Sambhal twice in 1998 and 1999 and his brother Ram Gopal Yadav won the seat in 2004. However, in 2014 the BJP won the seat for the first time in its electoral history when its candidate Satyapal Singh Saini defeated SP's Shafiqur Rahman Barq by a slim margin of over 5,000 votes. Barq won the seat in 2009 on a BSP ticket. The BJP has decided to field Parmeshwar Lal Saini this time against SP's Barq.

12. Bareilly (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Margin: 2,40,685)

2019 candidates: Santosh Kumar Gangwar (BJP) Vs Praveen Aron (Congress) Vs Bhagwat Saran Gangwar (SP)

BJP's Santosh Kumar Gangwar won the seat seven times in 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2014. In 2009, however, Congress leader Praveen Aron defeated Gangwar by over 9,000 votes. In 2014, Gangwar again made a comeback and won the constituency by over 2,40,000 votes. Aron was relegated to the fourth position.

13. Mainpuri (2014 Result: SP, Winner: Mulayam Singh Yadav, Margin; 3,64,666)

2019 candidates: Mulayam Singh Yadav (SP) Vs Prem Singh Shakya (BJP)

Mainpuri is a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party and Mulayam Singh Yadav represented the seat in 1996, 2004, 2009 and 2014. In 2014, Mulayam retained his Azamgarh seat and left Mainpuri which he won by a record margin of over 3,64,000 votes. Later, Tej Pratap Singh Yadav won a bypoll and retained the seat for his party. Mulayam is in the fray again from Mainpuri and will be contesting his last electoral battle.

14. Firozabad (2014 Result: SP, Winner: Akshay Yadav, Margin: 1,14,059)

2019 candidates: Akshay Yadav (SP) Vs Shivpal Singh Yadav (PSPL) Vs Chandrasen Jadon (BJP)

Firozabad has been considered as another stronghold of the Samajwadi Party as it has won the seat four times in 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014. Akhilesh Yadav won the seat in 2009 but decided to retain his Kannauj seat. Later in a big shock, Congress candidate and former SP leader Raj Babbar defeated Akhilesh's wife Dimple Yadav in a bypoll. BJP's Prabhu Dayal Katheria represented the seat thrice in 1991, 1996 and 1998. In 2014, SP's Akshay Yadav won the seat by over 1,14,000 votes but now has to face his rebel uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav.

15. Badaun (2014 Result: SP, Winner; Dharmendra Yadav, Margin: 1,66,347)

2019 candidates: Sangh Mitra Maurya (BJP) Vs Saleem Iqbal Shervani (Congress) Vs Dharmendra Yadav (SP)

In 2014, SP candidate Dharmendra Yadav won the seat by over 1,66,000 votes. Yadav will face a tough battle this time with BJP's Sangh Mitra Maurya and Congress candidate Saleem Iqbal Shervani are also in the fray. The BJP won the seat only once in 1991 whereas Shervani represented the seat five times in 1984 (as a Congress candidate), 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004 (as an SP candidate) before his defeat at the hands of Dharmendra Yadav in 2009.

16. Kanpur (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Murli Manohar Joshi, Margin: 2,22,946)

2019 candidates: Satyadev Pachauri (BJP) Vs Sriprakash Jaiswal (Congress) Vs Ram Kumar (SP)

In the last seven elections, the BJP won the seat four times in 1991, 1996, 1998 and 2014 whereas the Congress represented the constituency three times in 1999, 2004 and 2009. Congress leader and former Union minister Sriprakash Jaiswal won it thrice before he lost it at the hands of BJP's Murli Manohar Joshi in 2014. BJP's Jagat Vir Singh Drona also represented the seat thrice. The BJP has denied Joshi a ticket this time and chose Satyadev Pachauri as its nominee.

17. Kannauj (2014 Result: SP, Winner: Dimple Yadav, Margin: 19,907)

2019 candidates: Subrat Pathak (BJP) Vs Dimple Yadav (SP)

Dimple Yadav won the seat for the first time in a 2012 bypoll after her husband and then sitting MP Akhilesh Yadav became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. Akhilesh represented the seat thrice in 2000 (bypoll), 2004 and 2009. His father Mulayam won the seat in 1999. In 2014, Dimple was able to win the seat with a low margin of over 19,000 votes. BJP's Subrat Pathak, who gave her the close fight in 2014, is contesting against her.

18. Unnao (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Sakshi Maharaj, Margin: 3,10,173)

2019 candidates: Sakshi Maharaj (BJP) Vs Annu Tandon (Congress) Vs Arun Shankar Shukla (SP)

BJP's Sakshi Maharaj will be up against Congress candidate Annu Tandon again this time. In 2014, Sakshi Maharaj defeated SP candidate Arun Shankar Shukla by over 3 lakh votes and Annu Tandon came at the fourth spot. In 2009, Tandon represented the seat. BJP's Devi Bux Singh won the seat thrice in 1991, 1996 and 1998.

19. Etawah (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Ashok Kumar Doharey, Margin: 1,72,946)

2019 candidates: Ram Shankar Katheria (BJP) Vs Ashok Kumar Doharey (Congress) Vs Kamlesh Katheria (SP)

In 2014, BJP's Ashok Kumar Doharey won the seat by over 1,70,000 votes but the party has denied him a ticket this time and he is now a Congress nominee. He will be taking on BJP's Ram Shankar Katheria, who has been shifted to Etawah from Agra. In the last seven elections, the SP won the seat four times in 1996, 1999, 2004 and 2009 whereas the BJP represented the constituency twice in 1998 and 2014. BSP leader Kanshi Ram won the seat once in 1991.

20. Farrukhabad (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Mukesh Rajput, Margin: 1,50,502)

2019 candidates: Mukesh Rajput (BJP) Vs Salman Khurshid (Congress) Vs Manoj Agarwal (BSP)

BJP's Mukesh Rajput won the seat in 2014 by over 1,50,000 votes. Congress leader and former Union minister Salman Khurshid lost his deposit and came at the fourth spot. Rajput is again contesting on a BJP ticket this time and is facing Khurshid and BSP's Manoj Agarwal. Khurshid represented the seat twice in 1991 and 2009 whereas BJP's Sakshi Maharaj also won the seat twice in 1996 and 1998.

21. Lucknow (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Rajnath Singh, Margin: 2,72,749)

2019 candidates: Rajnath Singh (BJP) Vs Pramod Krishnam (Congress) Vs Poonam Sinha (SP)

Lucknow has been a stronghold of the BJP and it has never lost an election since 1991. Atal Bihari Vajpayee won the seat for the first time in 1991 and again represented it in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004. In 2009, Lalji Tandon won the seat for the party. Rajnath Singh fought from the seat for the first time in 2014 and defeated Congress candidate Rita Bhauguna Joshi by over 2,70,000 votes. Joshi is now in the BJP and contesting from Allahabad. Rajnath is again in the fray and facing Poonam Sinha and Pramod Krishnam. The Congress last represented the seat in 1984 when Sheila Kaul got elected.

22. Amethi (2014 Result: Congress, Winner: Rahul Gandhi, Margin: 1,07,903)

2019 candidates: Rahul Gandhi (Congress) Vs Smriti Irani (BJP)

Amethi has been a Congress bastion since the first Lok Sabha polls as the party lost the seat only twice in 1977 and 1998. In 1998, BJP's Sanjay Singh won the prestigious seat for the party for the first time. Rajiv Gandhi won the seat four times in 1981 (bypoll), 1984, 1989 and 1991 (he was assassinated before the declaration of results). Satish Sharma represented the constituency twice in 1991 and 1996 whereas Sonia Gandhi once in 1999. Rahul Gandhi has been representing the seat since 2004 and is trying his luck for the fourth term this time. BJP's Smriti Irani, who gave Rahul Gandhi a close fight in 2014, will be taking on the Congress chief again.

23. Rae Bareli (2014 Result: Congress, Winner: Sonia Gandhi, Margin: 3,52,713)

2019 candidates: Sonia Gandhi (Congress) Vs Dinesh Pratap Singh (BJP)

Like Amethi, Rae Bareli is another Congress fiefdom in Uttar Pradesh. Sonia Gandhi has been representing the seat since 2004 and is again contesting the polls. However, BJP's Ashok Singh won the seat twice in 1996 and 1998. Former prime minister Indira Gandhi represented the constituency twice in 1967 and 1971 before she was defeated by Raj Narain in 1977. In 2014, Sonia Gandhi won the seat with a huge margin of over 3,50,000 votes.

24. Bahraich (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Savitri Bai Phule, Margin: 95,645)

2019 candidates: Savitri Bai Phule (Congress) Vs Shabbir Ahmad (SP) Vs Akshaibar Lal (BJP)

In 2014, BJP candidate Savitri Bai Phule won the seat with a margin of over 95,000 votes but now Phule is in the Congress. She will be contesting against BJP's Akshaibar Lal and SP's Shabbir Ahmad. In the last seven elections, the BJP represented the seat four times in 1991, 1996, 1999 and 2014 whereas the BSP, the SP and the Congress won the seat in 1998, 2004 and 2009 respectively. Former Union minister Arif Mohammed Khan won the seat thrice.

25. Dhaurahra (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Rekha Verma, Margin: 1,25,675)

2019 candidates: Jitin Prasada (Congress) Vs Rekha Verma (BJP) Vs Arshad Iliyas Siddiqui (BSP)

Former Union minister and Congress leader Jitin Prasada is again facing BJP's Rekha Verma in Dhaurahra. In 2014, Rekha Verma won the seat with a good margin of over 1,25,000 votes and Prasada came at the fourth spot. Prasada represented the seat in 2009 and before the delimitation process represented the Shahjahanpur seat also in 2004.

26. Allahabad (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Shyama Charan Gupta, Margin: 62,009)

2019 candidates: Rita Bahuguna Joshi (BJP) Vs Rajendra Singh Patel (SP) Vs Yogesh Shukla (Congress)

27. Sultanpur (2014 Result: BJP, Winner: Varun Gandhi, Margin: 1,78,902)
