Mel Gibson, who is best known for his action hero roles, will helm Destroyer, based on the Battle of Okinawa. This will be Apocalypto director’s second straight World War II film following Hacksaw Ridge, which released in 2016.

The upcoming film will bring on screen the story of American naval ship USS Laffey. The ship was attacked multiple times from the Japanese Army and earned itself the nickname- ‘The Ship That Would Not Die’’.

Interestingly, the 62-year-old filmmaker’s last project Hacksaw Ridge also centred around the Battle of Okinawa but the film showed the battle on ground.

The cast and crew are expected to start filming in the fall. The naval war movie is based on Hell From the Heavens: The Epic Story of the USS Laffey and World War II's Greatest Kamikaze Attack by John Wukovits.

A report in Hollywood Reporter suggested that Gibson’s girlfriend Rosalind Ross has written the script for the film. Rosalind has worked as a writer for the popular American TV series Matador.

The Braveheart director is also in talks with Warner Bros. to feature in The Six Billion Dollar Man. The film will also star Mark Wahlberg in a key role.
