Amit Shah writes letter to law commission; pitches PM Modi's idea of 'One Nation One Election'

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Monday wrote a letter to the Law Commission, pitching the idea of One Nation One Election in the country. In his eight-page letter to the commission, the BJP chief also explained various benefits of holding simultaneous elections in the country, saying it would check expenditure and ensure that the nation is not in "election mode" throughout the year.

Shah said the claim that holding two sets of polls was against the federal structure of the country is a "baseless" argument while on the contrary, he stated, it would strengthen the federal structure of the country.

The BJP president also claimed that the opposition to simultaneous polls seems to be politically motivated.

The law panel, which is examining the feasibility of holding simultaneous polls, had sought the views of the political parties before finalising its report. Both the BJP and Congress had stayed away from consultation organised by the commission in this regard last month.

The Congress had met the Commission top brass recently where it had opposed the concept of simultaneous polls.

It's been a quite long time that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several other ministers, has been pushing the concept of simultaneous polls across India. President Ram Nath Kovind and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also came forward to support BJP's One Nation One Election.
