Army Major Chitresh Singh Bisht, was killed on Saturday while defusing an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which had been planted by terrorists in Laam area in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir, was to get married on March 7. The IED was planted 1.5 km inside the Line of Control (LoC). The officer, a Major, belonged to the army’s corps of engineers.

“At about 1500 hours (3 pm) on Saturday, mines were detected during sanitisation of a track in Nowshera sector. Major Chitresh Singh Bisht, who was leading the bomb disposal team, defused one of the mines successfully. While neutralising another mine, the device got activated and the officer suffered grievous injuries and attained martyrdom,” Hindustan Times quoted defence spokesman Lt Col Devender Anand as saying.

Bisht, 31, belonged to Dehradun in Uttarakhand and is survived by his parents. “Major Chitresh Singh Bisht was a brave and sincere soldier. The nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty,” Anand added.

Expressing his condolence, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot tweeted: "Enraged over another dastardly act of blast in #Naushera, #Rajouri today in which Army Major Chitresh Singh Bisht has been martyred. I express my heartfelt condolence to the family of the martyr...may god give them strength to bear this loss." 

The incident took place two days after 40 CRPF personnel were killed and five injured in one of the deadliest terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, by a Jaish-e-Mohammed suicide bomber in South Kashmir's Pulwama district. Massive protests and candlelight marches were held on Friday in different parts of the country against the attack and curfew was imposed in Jammu city following violence during demonstrations there.
