Heavy rains wreak havoc in north India; 27 killed in UP, parts of Delhi inundated

Heavy monsoon rains had wreaked in different parts of Uttar Pardesh killing as many as 27 people in the state, according to a government spokesperson.

“Widespread rains in different parts of the state since yesterday (Thursday) claimed 27 lives,” the spokesperson said.

The official said; “While five people died in Agra, four deaths were reported in Mainpuri, three each in Muzaffarnagar and Kasganj, two each in Meerut and Bareilly and one each in Kanpur Dehat, Mathura, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Jhansi, Rae Bareli, Jalaun and Jaunpur, adding as many as 12 others were injured in different parts of the state”.

Thundershowers were likely to continue at many places across the state, according to the MET department.

The weatherman said that southwest monsoon was 'active' over east Uttar Pradesh and 'vigorous' over the western part of the state causing moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers at most places.

In Agra, as many as six people were killed in rain-related incidents. Agra had also witnessed heavy downpour in the last 24 hours. Heavy rains had caused water logging inside the Taj Mahal complex.

The Agra administration had issued ordered for the closure of schools in the district on July 27 and 28 on account of heavy rains.

Meanwhile, people in the national capital woke up to heavy rains for the second consecutive day on Friday. Waterlogging and traffic snarls were witnessed at several places of the city, forcing the Delhi Police to alert commuters about the routes that can be avoided.

The meteorological (MeT) department warned of moderate to heavy rains throughout the day.

Waterlogging was reported at Zakir Hussain college, near Ramlila Maidan, and civic centre in central Delhi. Heavy traffic congestion was reported at RTR Marg in the carriageway from Vasant Kunj towards airport.

Waterlogging had also caused congestion at Okhla Mandi, Badarpur railway underpass, Under IP flyover, Under Modi mill flyover, Jawaharlal Nehru Road.

Many schools in Ghaziabad remained closed under the directions of the district magistrate on account of heavy rains and adverse weather conditions.
