As many as 5 lakh CPI-M backed farmers and workers started a protest march from Parliament Street to historic Jantar Mantar in Delhi under the name Majdoor Kisan Sangharsh Rally on Wednesday.

A day ahead of the worker-farmer rally, several farmers' outfits - All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), All India Agriculture Workers Union (AIAWU) and Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) from various states reached Ramlila Maidan in Delhi and were campaigning for their protest against Narendra Modi government.

The demands of the farmers include effective implementation of labour laws, minimum wage, more employment, and recognition of one crore Anganwadi and ASHA workers as a workforce. The protesters feel that the Modi government did not take significant steps for the welfare labourers and peasants of the country.

Besides that, farmers, who participated in Maharashtra Kisan rally earlier in March, also took part in the Majdoor Kisan Sangharsh Rally, pressing their demand for a loan waiver and proper minimum support price for peasants.

"Tomorrow a historic rally of industrial workers, farmers & agricultural labourers will storm the country’s Capital demanding better wages, more jobs, better prices for farm produce, end to privatisation, stopping changes in labour laws, ending the contract labour system," the CPI-M tweeted.
