Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday told Rajya Sabha that the central government will identify illegal immigrants living in the country and will deport them as per the international law. Replaying to a question by Samajwadi Party MP Javed Ali Khan that whether the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be implemented in other states of the country as well, Shah said, "The government will identify illegal immigrants living on every inch of the country's soil and will deport them as per the international law."

Currently, the National Register of Citizens is being implemented in Assam and the list is being updated under the monitoring of the Supreme Court. The top court has set July 31 as a deadline for final publication of the updated NRC data.

Speaking about the row over genuine names being not included in the NRC, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said that a petition signed by 25 lakh people has been submitted to the President seeking extension of the deadline to correct the irregularities.

"So the government has requested the (Supreme) Court to extend the time for this purpose. There will be some delay but the NRC will be implemented properly without any faults," Rai said.

Responding to a query on the number of Rohingya Muslims living in the country, the minister said that the government, as of now, don’t have accurate data but claimed that some of them have gone back to Bangladesh while others are spread across the country.
