England midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss the FIFA World Cup in Russia after suffering a knee ligament damage while playing for Liverpool in Champions League semi-final first leg against AS Roma on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old tenacious midfielder left the field on a stretcher after colliding with Roma full back and ex-Manchester City player Aleksander Kolarov in the first half of Liverpool’s 5-2 victory at the Anfield.

"Absolutely devastated to have picked up this injury at such a crucial time in the season," Oxlade-Chamberlain tweeted on Wednesday.

"Gutted I won't be able to play any further part now in our Champions League run for Liverpool and also the World Cup with England."

Oxlade-Chamberlain had a remarkable turnaround in terms of form and had become an important member in Liverpool’s high pressing, hardworking midfield, solidifying his place in the playing XI after the departure of Brazilian star Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January.

This will be the third international tournament that Chamberlain will be missing.

The Liverpool midfielder missed the 2014 World Cup after being injured in a warm-up fixture with England and also sat out of 2016 European Championship with a similar injury.
