Indian Men’s Hockey team upped their game against Ireland to beat them 4-1 and recover from a massive upset caused a day earlier in a fifth-sixth match of the ongoing Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia on Saturday.
The victory enabled India to take a revenge on Ireland after their 2-3 defeat in the last round robin match yesterday.
Ireland who were missing two players because of bad health were dominated by the Indians. Indian team had exit the medal contention after a shocking 2-3 defeat on Friday.
Indian team led by veteran midfielder Sardar Singh finished the tournament on high after finishing fifth in the standings.
Varun Kumar scored a brace, while Shilanand Lakra and Gurjant Singh ended up with one each. Ireland's sole goal came from the sticks of Julian Dale in the 48th minute.
India’s tactics were spot on from the starting whistle and they earned back-to-back penalty corners in the fifth minute. Varun scored from his second chance after his first attempt was saved to give India a well-deserved lead.
Shilanand Lakra tapped in a high cross from Nilan Xess and India had a resounding 2-0 lead before half-time.
India came back hunting for more goals after half-time and scored the third goal of the game as Varun completed his brace through a penalty corner. After the third goal, the floodgates had opened, Gurjant Singh scored the fourth goal of the match after some clever piece of work from Talwinder.
Ireland managed to score a consolation goal in the final quarter of the game when Dale scored a well taken goal after splitting the Indian defense.
India were awarded two more penalty corners later in the final quarter but failed to score both.
