Los Angeles:

Big Hollywood names including Johnny Depp, Helen Mirren, Ridley Scott and Will Smith have been left out at the 88th Academy Awards nominations, despite earning praise for their performances last year.

Depp was an early favourite in this year’s Oscars race for his portrayal of smuggler James “Whitey” Bulger in Warner Bros’ crime drama film “Black Mass”.

Scott was expected to win the best director category this year for his ambitious space film “The Martian”, starring Matt Damon. But like Ben Affleck for “Argo”, the director’s branch of the Academy overlooked him. His slot went to relative newcomer—director Lenny Abramson of “Room”.

However, he is nominated for best producer for “The Martian”, which has earned seven nods.

Smith adopted a Nigerian accent to play Dr Bennet Omalu, who discovered a link between NFL players and permanent brain trauma, in “Concussion”.

Although he hosted many Academy Q&As to support the Sony Pictures release, the lukewarm reviews for the film may have hurt him.

Jordan, the lead actor of “Creed”, is one of Hollywood’s most promising young stars. The Academy overlooked his breakthrough role in 2013’s “Fruitvale Station”, and also did not give him any love for “Creed” even though Sylvester Stallone was recognised in the supporting actor category for “Rocky” reboot.

Oscar-winning actress Mirren landed Golden Globe and SAG Award nods for “Trumbo” and a SAG nomination for “Woman in Gold” but found herself ignored at Oscars.

“Carol” helmer Todd Haynes did not make it to the nomination list of best director even though he earned nods in Golden Globes and BAFTAs.

Inspite of getting critical acclaim for its sensitive presentation of same-sex romance, “Carol” also missed a slot in best picture category.

Idris Elba was expected to be included in the best supporting actor category for portraying the commandant in “Beasts of No Nation”, Cary Fukunaga’s drama set in West Africa.

Although “Beasts” received a SAG ensemble nomination, and had strong support from within the Academy’s actors branch, it failed to pick up an Oscar nominations, despite a big push from Netflix for its inaugural original feature.

Actor Michael Keaton, who was robbed off a best actor win last year, did not even earn a nomination this time for his performance in “Spotlight”.

All the actors in the movie were placed in the best supporting actor categories, and while that meant good news for Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams, who were both nominated today, Keaton was left out.
