India’s campaign in the Fed Cup tennis tournament was off to a disastrous start with the team going down 0-3 in the opening match of the Asia/Oceania Zone Group I tie against Thailand here today.

In the first singles match of pool A, 399th-ranked Prerna Bhambri lost 2-6 5-7 to world No.629 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat.

In the secomd match, Ankita Rana, ranked 307, fought hard but went down 6-7 (5) 3-6 to world No.149 Luksika Kumkhum.

The downward slump continued in the doubles match with Prerna and Prarthana G. Thombare 7-6 (6) 2-6 4-6 to Thailand’s Kamonwan Buayam and Peangtarn Plipuech.

In other pool A matches Uzbekistan defeated Japan 2-1. Pool B features Kazakhstan, China, South Korea and

Chinese Taipei. Kazakhstan beat South Korea 3-0, while Chinese Taipei defeated China 2-1.
