New Delhi:

Amid raging controversies against Udta Punjab's content, which is allegedly inspired from the real life drug addiction of youth in Punjab, the film released with one cut and 'A' certificate as per Supreme Court's order.

Nothing like what has been claimed so far in the headlines, 'Udta Punjab' is a fictional drama based upon 4 lives in Punjab with one connection - drugs menace.

'Udta Punjab' brings story of a famous drug addict singer, Bihar migrant girl, doctor and a cop with series of events that bind them to a hard-hitting motive – vanish drugs and give people a healthy life. How they unite and do they succeed are some questions which find their answers in the film. (Also read: Twitteratis reactions on Udta Punjab)

Shahid Kapoor as Tommy Singh is a drug addict singer and 'Gabru rockstar' in this one. Remember Haider? A performance packed act that whacks your mind; in Udta Punjab he matches the same tempo but in a better and cooler avatar.

On stage Shahid Kapoor looks killer, charmer and when off stage he is even better. He is a treat to watch. From fighting the world to struggling in himself, Tommy Singh's character offers many variations that tag him as the USP of the movie.

Adding significance to the script is Alia Bhatt's character of a Bihar migrant girl who gets trapped among baddies from Punjab. Once a hockey champion is now a girl fighting for life; her character tries to define the mind-set of people for a girl who has nothing by her side.

She takes a 'Highway' to fly high in 'Udta Punjab'. Forced to become a sex slave, Alia in her character digs deep roots to unveil the strength of a woman one builds while fighting under hard circumstances.

Also tweaking screen is Kareena Kapoor as doctor and Diljit Dosanjh as cop. Both the stars have done a fair good job, but blame it on flat nature of the script that didn't allow them to open wings and show what their real calibre is. Diljit's character comes with a mix of innocence and anger. While Kareena is angry woman and a doctor; some more twists would have added more colours in their characters.

With Shahid Kapoor as 'Gabru' rockstar, the film is bound to have peppy numbers. And they are in ample amount to keep you grooving. Ruling all is 'Chitta Ve', which straight away sets the mood and Tommy's character in the film. Ud daa Punjab has not been directly used, but one can hear it as background music of many scenes. The songs are already on top of charts and they will remain for some more time as they target psyche of youth well.

Interestingly, cinematographer Rajeev Ravi has paid special attention in upbringing the feel of Punjab without even using their trademark dancing style. It's all in the locations used that give enough room to take viewers in grand space of Punjab.

Director Abhishek Choubey, who is well known for Omkara and Kaminey, has done a brilliant job one more time in creating a piece that is not his best work but still one of his greatest works.

Final Verdict: 'Udta Punjab' is a complete performance packed drama based in Punjab and surely does not promote drugs. It must be watched for Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and intriguing nature of the script.

The film has been leaked online, but as a responsible news channel we urge you to watch it only in theatres. #Stoppiracy
