Auto majors clock higher sales in June; Maruti, Honda down

Maruti Suzuki India saw a dip in June sales due to disruption in component supplies following fire at one of its vendors, while other major passenger vehicle makers including Hyundai, M&M and Tata Motors today reported rise in their domestic sales.

Honda Cars too saw dip in sales last month, whereas Ford and Renault clocked gains.

MSI domestic sales tumbled 10.2 per cent last month to 92,133 units as against 1,02,626 in June 2015. Its mini segment cars, including Alto and WagonR, saw sales dip by 19.3 per cent to 27,712 units compared with 34,336 in the year-ago month, MSI said in a statement.

Sales of the compact segment comprising Swift, Estilo, Ritz, Dzire and Baleno too slid 12.5 per cent to 39,971 units in June as against 45,701 units a year ago, it added.

In contrast, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) sold 39,806 units in the domestic market last month as compared with 36,300 units in June last year, up 9.7 per cent.

HMIL Senior Vice-President (Sales and Marketing) Rakesh Srivastava said volumes grew mainly due to a strong pull performance of models such as Grand i10, Elite i20 & Creta and on the buildup of positive environment with good beginning of monsoons, the announcement of 7th Pay commission for central government employees.

Utility vehicles major Mahindra & Mahindra’ June domestic sales were up 5 per cent at 34,991 units as compared with 33,282 units in June 2015.

“With the advent of a good monsoon which we are currently witnessing, we hope to see improved sentiment and a buoyancy in demand, enhancing rural prosperity,” M&M Chief Executive (auto division) Pravin Shah said.

Another homegrown firm Tata Motors saw its passenger vehicles sales in the domestic market jump by 22 per cent last month to 12,509 units as against 10,281 in the year-ago period.

Ford India also saw strong performance last month with sales rising over twofold to 9,469 units in June as against 4,527 units in the same period a year ago.

Likewise, Renault India reported an over two-fold increase in sales to 11,837 units in June as against 4,340 units same month last year.

Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL), however, had a poor month with sales down 37.93 per cent at 11,407 units in June. It had sold 18,380 units in the same month last year.
