The Telangana government has declared Murrel as its state fish. This Murrel fish is widely known as Korramatta or Korrameenu in Telugu, one of the largest producing species across the state.
The government has added as the seventh state icon for different species of State bird. Pala Pitta (Indian Roller or Blue Jay); flower – Tangedu (Tanner’s Cassia); fruit – Mango; tree – Jammi chettu (Prosopis Cineraria); sport – Kabaddi and animal – Jinka (deer) are some of the earlier icons.
By order, the government also issued guidelines recommended by an expert committee on animal and fish biodiversity to regulate fish culture to conserve the indigenous aquatic diversity in the water bodies in Telangana.
According to the order 109 fish species found in rivers, canals and water bodies in the State and many of them were nearly threatened and vulnerable. So it was decided to permit Tilapia fish nurseries only if they were already registered with the Fisheries Department.
