Assam CM Sonowal briefs PM, Rajnath about situation in Kokrajhar

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh about the situation in Assam where at least 14 people were killed by extremists.

Sonowal, who was in Delhi, met the Prime Minister and apprised him about the incident in Kokrajhar district and the steps taken to nab those involved in it.

The Chief Minister also informed the Home Minister, who assured full Central assistance to the state government, official sources said.Sonowal has cut short his visit to the national capital and returned to Assam this evening after the violent incident and instructed state police to arrest those involved the in it.

The Chief Minister announced ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased, Rs one lakh to those seriously injured and free treatment to other injured.

Terror struck Assam today when a group of heavily armed militants dressed in army fatigues and suspected of belonging to a Bodo separatist outfit opened indiscriminate fire and lobbed grenades at a crowded weekly market killing 14 people.
