31st Olympic Games was officially launched with a subtle yet powerful message of global warming in a glittering opening ceremony here. Brazil organisers put their passion for football aside and made climate change and depletion of natural resources as the central theme in a thought-provoking nearly four-hour long ceremony to signal the opening of the 17-day extravaganza which will be competed by more than 11,000 athletes from 209 countries, including India, and a refugee Olympic team.

2.Mainpuri: In Mulayam's baston, police beat two men to death

Two labourers in Mainpuri, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's baston, were beaten to death by policemen at a checkpoint for refusing to give a bribe of Rs 100. The two men identified as Dileep Yadav and Pankaj Yadav did due to the injuries sustained by them during an assault.

3.Kokrajhar terror attack: Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal meets victims at hospital

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday met the victims of Kokrajhar terror attack at the hospital where they have been admitted. Denouncing the attack by suspected NDFB(S) in Korajhar that claimed 12 lives as “cowardly and dastardly”, Sonowal had said on Friday that the militants would be dealt with “very sternly”.

4.500 cows starve to death in Rajasthan cow shelter after workers go on strike

About 500 cows have died at a Rajasthan government-run cattle shelter near the state capital over the last two weeks, reportedly. All the contractual workers at the Hingonia cow shelter have been on strike since July 21 because they haven’t been paid their dues for May and June.

5.3 pilgrims among 4 killed in landslide enroute to Vaishnodevi

Four persons including three pilgrims were killed and nine injured in a landslide triggered by heavy rains enroute to the cave shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district.
