The Kerala government on thursday announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of a 65-year-old woman who was killed by a pack of street dogs near here, even as it reiterated its commitment to tackle the menace.

A high-level meeting chaired by him had also decided to hold special sterilisation camp in areas where the street dog menace was serious.
A four-year-old boy was badly mauled on his lower jaw by a pack of street dogs in Kollam district yesterday.In the backdrop of the continuing attacks by street dogs, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had on August 22 directed officials to take urgent steps to catch stray canine with the help of trained catchers.
Various measures, including sterilisation, would be undertaken, he added.
The cabinet also sanctioned Rs 50,000 to another woman of the same locality who was injured in a separate attack by dogs, Jaleel said. He said the government would go ahead with steps to check the stray dog menace.Siluvama, who was badly bitten by the dogs in Pulluvilla locality, succumbed to injuries while being rushed to a hospital near here on Sunday night.
The decision on the compensation was taken at the state cabinet meeting held here, Minister for Local Administration K T Jaleel told reporters.
