Rio in the past, PM Modi sets up task force to prepare for next three Olympics Games

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that a task force will be set up to prepare an action plan for the next three Olympic Games that will be held in 2020, 2024, 2028. According to reports, the task force will prepare the overall strategy for sports facilities, training, selection procedure and other related matters.

The decision comes in the wake of the dismal performance by Indian sportspersons at recently concluded Rio Olympics in which India ended up with just two models - a silver by ace shuttler PV Sindhu and bronze by wrestler Sakshi Malik.

Atanu Das, Bombayla Devi and Deepika Kumari managed to qualify to Round of 16 in individual archery events but failed to advance further at the Rio Olympics 2016. In Men’s Badminton Singles, Srikanth Kidambi lost in quarterfinals to World number one Lin Dan.

India’s biggest badminton star Saina Nehwal was disqualified in the group stages while Indian Men Hockey Team finished at 8th spot. Deepa Karmakar and Abhinav Bindra failed to secure a medal by a whisker on 4th rank in Gymnastics and Shooting events. 

Yogeshwar Dutt promised and offered a medal but in the end, he went down with a whimper in the qualifying round to bow out within just six minutes. Gagan Narang scored 384 in Standing stage and he was finally placed at 33 rank with a total of 1162 points. Gagan Narang failed to qualify for 50m Rifle 3 positions.

In tennis, India’s mixed double pair of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna failed to advance to the final after losing their semi-final match to US pair while Leander Paes-Rohan Bopanna crashed out on 1st Day.

Rower Dattu Bhokanal finished 13th overall and leader of rowing sculls C race.
