Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed pain over the developments in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the Cauvery water dispute and appealed for peace while underlining that violence cannot provide solution to any problem.
He asserted that the dispute can only be solved within the legal ambit and "breaking the law is not a viable alternative".
Meanwhile, opposition DMK has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention in the Cauvery crisis, urging him to convene a meeting of chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and "ensure a cordial atmosphere" in both states.
"Prime Minister Narenda Modi should invite the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu (J Jayalalithaa) and Karnataka(Siddaramiah) soon for talks and ensure a cordial atmosphere (in the two states)," DMK Treasurer and Opposition Leader in Tamil Nadu Assembly, M K Stalin, said.

Karnataka Home Minister KJ George on Tuesday said that his government will find the people responsible for instigating violnce in the name Cauvery water protests and take strict action. The home minister also said that it should be appreciated that the government was able to bring the city to order in time otherwise there would have been more loss of life.
Earlier in the day, Union minister Venkaiah Naidu said that violence in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over Cauvery waters is quite disturbing and it cannot be justified on any ground. Addressing the media over rising violence, Naidu appealed to the people of both the States to immediately stop indulging in violence and ensure peace and normalcy.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is going to hold a cabinet meeting at 11am to discuss the ongoing unrest over the Cauvery water dispute. High level Congress Party leaders are expected to attend the meeting.
Widespread violence erupted on Monday in Bengaluru and some other parts of Karnataka, while sporadic trouble was witnessed in Tamil Nadu following Supreme Court’s modified order on sharing Cauvery water by the two riparian states.
Hyderabad Police has issued a directive to all TV channel to gate-keep any content which might incite further violence in the region. “Managements of all TV Channels are requested/advised to adhere to program code in interest of maintenance of public order/peace in Hyderabad,” Hyderabad Police said.

On Monday, Police opened fire when a mob tried to attack a patrol vehicle at Hegganahalli in Rajagopal Nagar police limits as violence flared up in Bengaluru city with rampaging mobs setting fire to buses and trucks with Tamil Nadu registration plates.

”Two were brought with bullet injuries. One with bullet injury near the heart has died. The other is being operated for injury on right thigh,” Dr. Giridhar, Managing Director of Lakshmi Multi-Speciality Hospital, where they were taken said.
Soon after the apex court gave its amended order, directing Karnataka to release 12000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu till September 20, violence and arson flared up in Bengaluru, with rampaging mobs setting afire at least 30 vehicles bearing Tamil Nadu number plates.

As violence broke out sending a wave of panic across Bengaluru, the city was brought under prohibitory orders till September 14. A prominent transport company depot in the city bore the brunt with at least 30 buses going up in flames.
Managing Director of Salem headquartered KPN Tours and Travels Limited Rajesh Natarajan claimed in Chennai 40 of his buses were set on fire.

Incidents of arson came even as police said they have made elaborate security arrangements with 15,000 policemen being deployed, bolstered by Karnataka State Reserve Police, City Armed Reserve Police, Rapid Action Force, Quick Reaction Teams, special forces, Central Industrial Security Force and Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force.
In view of the deteriorating situation, the Centre rushed 10 companies (about 1,000 personnel) of the special anti-riot paramilitary force RAF to Karnataka.
