Coimbatore:
Police have nabbed around 80 persons who allegedly indulged in violence during the funeral procession of a Hindu Munnani functionary on September 23 with the help of video footage from cameras installed at strategic locations and shops.
Police said they have identified a large number of people through the footage along the 18 km stretch from government hospital to Thudiyalur. They said one footage which had gone viral showed some youth looting a leading mobile shop in Thudiyalur area.
Police said they are on the lookout for two persons who torched a two-wheeler showroom-cum-garage in Sundarapuram early yesterday, which was put off by a police patrol. Footage in the garage revealed two masked persons pouring kerosene inside the showroom and setting it afire, they said.
A state-wide bandh called by Hindu Munnani on Sept 23 following the murder of its district spokesperson Sasikumar (36), the previous day had turned violent in some parts with a police jeep set ablaze and three personnel sustaining burns. Sasikumar was returning home in Subramaniampalayam in the outskirts of the city on a two-wheeler late at night on September 22 when unidentified assailants chased him on motorcycles and attacked him with sickles. He was immediately taken to a private hospital, where he died.
