OROP suicide issue: Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal released after being detained

The Vice-President Of Indian National Congress Rahul Gandhi On Wednesday Went To Meet The Family Of Ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal Who Committed Suicide Over OROP Issue. But He Was Denied Entry At The RML Hospital Gate By The Security Personnel.

Several political parties, including Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), began their protests in Delhi hours after reports about the suicide of former serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal came to light on Wednesday.

Delhi Police Special Commissioner MK Meena made an emphatic statement on Rahul Gandhi's detention, quoting "Democracy doesn't mean creating obstruction. Leaders must also understand that hospital is not the place to hold any demonstrations".

Congress Vice-President Rahu Gandhi was detained at Mandir Marg Police Station for 'disruption of duty' after he wasn't allowed to enter RML hospital to meet ex-serviceman's family, said Delhi Police Special Commissioner MK Meena.

Delhi Police Special Commissioner MK Meena while commenting on Rahul Gandhi's detention said - "It's hospital & not place for demonstration. Rahul Gandhi detained for trying to enter hosp despite being advised otherwise".

Earlier in the day, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi was reportedly denied entry by the security personnel at the gate of Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital when he was trying to go inside the hospital to meet the family of Grewal. 

Earlier on the day, Delhi's deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was detained while he went to meet the family of deceased at the RML hospital. Congress MLA Randeep Surjewala was also detained.  

Later, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal condemned the detainment of Manish Sisodia. 

“Manish Sisodia detained? He had gone to meet family of deceased Ram Kishan ji. He is elected Dy CM. Whats wrong wid u Modiji? So insecure?” wrote Kejriwal on Twitter.

Ex-serviceman allegedly committed suicide over the issue of delay in One Rank One Pension scheme (OROP) in Delhi, police said.

The 70-year-old ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal from Haryana's Bhiwani district ended his life in the lawns behind the Jawahar Bhavan, which houses the Ministry of External Affairs, on Tuesday’s evening.

Police said he along with three of his companions had come to the city apparently to submit a memorandum to the Defence Ministry over the issue of OROP.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said he was saddened over the death of Grewal.

"Saddened by the death of subedar Ram Kishen Grewal. I express my heartfelt condolences. I have asked officials to provide me with details," Parrikar said in a tweet.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in an emotional video message, said that the Narendra Modi government had deceived the soldiers of the nation.
