New Delhi:

National airports operator Airports Authority of India (AAI) recently said it will allow scheduled commercial banks to operate temporary currency exchange counters at aerodromes as people still face difficulties in the wake of demonetisation of Rs1,000 and Rs 500 notes.

"Decision of the Government of India to demonetise the currency (Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes) across the nation has led to currency hardships for airport users and air travellers,"AAI said in a release.

"Hence, extending its support to the campaign andfacilitating airport users and air travellers, AAI has decidedto allow any scheduled commercial bank to open and operate (on temporary basis) currency exchange counter (small)."

Airports Authority of India (AAI) said such counters can operate free of cost till December 31. It would not levy any charges for space and electricity. Earlier this week, the government waived parking fee atairports till the mid-night of November 21. This is applicableon both AAI as well as privately operated airports.

There are 75 operational airports, including six run underjoint ventures.
